From the verdant meadows and the lush cultural landscape of Bøverdalen you can catch a glimpse of towering mountains in the far distance, as the road slowly ascends through the valley. It makes its way up to the summit at 1,434 metres, making the road northern Europe’s highest mountain pass. From the starting point in Lom, your expectations rise even before you drive out of the small village. Not every tourist route provides such a natural dramatic setting with a profusion of powerful impressions. Along the road you will be tempted to stop at the viewing points to soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings. At the Mefjellet stop you will find Knut Wold’s stone sculpture which allows us to view the mountain landscape from a different perspective. Continuing down towards the Sognefjord the mountain region appears untamed. Where the Hurrungane massif towers up to the heavens the mountains suddenly open up and the landscape changes once again. Towards Gaupne, the final point on this stretch, the road descends to skirt the beautiful Sognefjord whose clear waters change colour from green to blue in tune with the light and the weather. What should you do when you arrive? Relax and let your impressions sink in. Some people turn and drive the same way back, and are surprised to see how different everything is. Although everything is the same, it’s as if you see the surroundings anew.

The 108-kilometer section across Sognefjellet, known as Sognefjellsvegen, is designated a National Tourist Route. (http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/sognefjellet)
The road reaches the highest altitude on the public road network in Norway, 1434 m, and it is closed every winter.

On this journey along a route that for centuries has connected Norways east and west, you travel through Northern Europes highest mountain pass, at 1 434 metres above sea level. The Sognefjell road starts in the lush cultural landscape of Bøverdalen valley in the east and runs across the mountain plateau with panoramic views of glaciers and towering mountains before descending through valleys to the inner reaches of the Sognefjord with their tranquil hamlets in the west. The road across the roof of Norway passes not only mountains, but also fjords and valleys and a landscape brimming with cultural heritage sites.

Lom stave church is one of its many highlights. In a former era, this road was the highway from the coast inland. Salt and fish were brought eastwards, while butter, tar and pelts went in the other direction. In those days, the farmers and merchants held company on the journey across the mountain, so as not to be waylaid by highwaymen. Today it is safe to travel here, and the excitement along the road is found in magnificent mountain scenery encountering art and architecture.

National Tourist Route Sognefjellet runs from Lom to Gaupne over a total distance of 108 kilometres.

The mountain crossing is closed in the winter season, and in early May you may see the road lined with banks of snow up to ten metres in height. Sognefjellet

Aurlandsfjellet

Sogn og Fjordane/Hordalan... > Norwegen > Europa
August 6, 2012 - 4 sterne-Bewertung Route Motorradtour4.0
The route runs from fjord to fjord across high mountains where snow remains most of the summer. The viewing platform at Stegastein is a natural place to make a stop and offers a dizzying view over the fjord landscape.

The Nærøyfjord, included on the World Heritage List, offers breathtaking scenery. The Flåm railway line and Aurlandsdalen valley are further outstanding attractions close to the route, and well worth a detour. If you combine a visit to Aurlandsfjellet with a trip through the Lærdal Tunnel, which at 24.5 km is the worlds longest, you will be struck by the contrasts this area can offer.

National Tourist Route Aurlandsfjellet runs from Aurlandsvangen to Lærdalsøyri over a distance of 47 kilometres.

The mountain crossing is closed in the winter season, but the road from Aurlandsvangen to the Stegastein viewing platform is open throughout the winter. http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/aurlandsfjellet

Very nice route that will take you from between the wintersports destination of Gol and Lærdal by the Sognefjord. It passes through Hemsedal, which probably is Norways hippest Wintersports destination.

It also passes a golf-course up there on the mountain. Ive been told that in early Spring people use orange golf-balls!

Keep alert as there may be sheep/goats/cows in the road.

Marz 20, 2010 - 4 sterne-Bewertung Route Motorradtour4.0
Turn off E39 at Romarheim onto road 569 towards Mo. The road is a bit bumpy a first but the narrower it gets, the better the surface seems to be. There is not much traffic on this road but you need to stay alert during tourist season as there might be slow moving caravans lurking around the next corner. The bends are lovely and the scenery great. Make sure you make a stop in Mo and enjoy an ice cream in the tiny marina. As you continue on road nr 569 towards Dale the road is reduced to basically one lane at times. The surface is however rather good and an it is truly rewarding ride if you are into slower bends, as there are no long straights on this one. And the scenery is not too bad either...

November 15, 2008 - 4 sterne-Bewertung Route Motorradtour4.0
This is one of the official tourist roads of Norway. It takes you past farms and apple orchards through some very lovely scenery on mostly good roads. Theres a climb and descent midway with some nice hairpins and twists through the forest. Some sections are bumpy, but not too bad. You can buy apples, cherries and plums from roadside stands, practically fresh off the tree.

You can also visit the summer ski resort at Folgefonna glacier, about 15 km from Jondal. Dont worry about skiing, youll just break an ankle. Get yourself a nice lefse (delicious sweet pastry) in Jondal and enjoy it with a cup of coffee and a view of the glacier.

Good backroad which has moderate traffic, very quiet on weekdays. Nice scenery and fun roads. It varies from farmland, hills, twisties, some straights and some sweepers. Good choice for Sundaytripping based out of Bergen, start at Os and round off with a burger at Trengereid.

The Bergsdal road takes you up in the mountains on the old road between Bergen and Voss. The area has farms, summer houses and the occasional old power station. Beware of cows, sheep, potholes and blind corners. This is not a good speed run, but a relaxed scenic ride. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, the road is fun to ride and the local bulls are mostly harmless.

Sogn og Fjordane/Hordalan... > Norwegen > Europa
August 29, 2007 - 5 sterne-Bewertung Route Motorradtour5.0
The heart of the western fjord country. From Hermansverk, head north on Route 5 alongside the Jostedalsbreen glacier. At Skei, turn right on E39 to Byrkjelo, then hang a right towards olden then onwards to the famous Geirangerfjorden. Beauty such as this is hard to match. Alesund is a beautiful fishing town with hotels for a nights rest. From Alesund, you can make day trips to the famous Trollstiegen Pass or head south to the picturesque Norangsdalen Valley, a little travelled route that connects the town of Leknes and Hellesylt.
